Agios Dimitrios in Purko

A genius composition of four churches!
The important Byzantine church of the 13th century is located in the south of Kythira near the picturesque village of Pourkos, amidst a rich natural environment. The church is composed of four small churches with a common entrance, dedicated to Agios Dimitrios, the northeast one to Panagia, the north one to Agios Nikolaos and the northwest one to Michael the Archangel. It is considered one of the most important Byzantine churches in Kythira, with its Byzantine iconography dating from the early 13th century to the early 14th century. It is an extraordinary work of art of genius architectural inspiration, with originality in the composition, and harmony in the rhythm. Its originality and one of its main architectural features is that the roof of the temple bears two domes of Kythera style.
