Kythira for Explorers

Olive groves of Kythira

The Ultimate Hiking Guide to the Island of Contrasts

For the average tourist, Kythera is all about its beaches, castle and quaint tavernas. For the true explorer, however, this island is an endless paradise full of steep gorges, forgotten medieval castle towns, hidden waterfalls and ancient paths. The Kythera Trails network offers some of the most authentic and pristine hiking routes in Greece, connecting the rich history of the place with the unique biodiversity of the Mediterranean.

A hiking trip to Kythera is never one-dimensional. Within a few kilometers, the landscape transforms dramatically. Where you walk on an arid, almost Cycladic path, the route immerses you in lush, verdant vegetation reminiscent of Epirus, to finally end up on a secluded, wild beach. Put on your hiking boots, take plenty of water with you and get ready to discover Kythera that few know about. Based on our personal experience, we recommend the top marked hiking trails of Kythira that are definitely worth walking to experience unforgettable moments.

1. The Mills Gorge in Mylopotamos: A Green Oasis (Route M41)

This is perhaps the most famous, but also the most enchanting hiking trail on the island. Starting from the traditional square of Mylopotamos, the path transports you to another world, filled with running water, ancient plane trees and a series of 22 ruined watermills that once ground the island’s grain. As you descend the gorge, you will come across small natural lakes and the impressive “Fonissa” waterfall. The route is circular, ideal for hikers of all levels, and offers a unique feeling of coolness even on the hottest days of summer.

Useful Route Information:

  • Starting Point: The central square of Mylopotamos, with easy parking.
  • Duration & Distance: Approximately 2.5 hours for the full circular route, with a length of around 4.5 kilometers.
  • Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate, with some slippery spots near the waters and the mills.

2. Mesarete and the Lost Castle City of Paleochora (Route M31)

For lovers of history and wild beauty, hiking to Paleochora is a thrilling experience. The trail starts from the village of Potamos or Trifyllianika and crosses a landscape full of olive groves and low Mediterranean vegetation. As you approach your destination, the scenery becomes eerie. The Byzantine castle city of Agios Dimitrios (present-day Paleochora) stands in ruins on a steep cliff, at the point where three gorges join. The awe-inspiring location, combined with the heavy legend of its destruction by the pirate Barbarossa, rewards every step of the way.

Useful Route Information:

  • Starting Point: Trifyllianika settlement (just outside Potamos).
  • Duration & Distance: Approximately 3 hours (return), with a total length of approximately 6 kilometers.
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate, with several uphill and downhill sections on rocky terrain.

3. From Chora to Kapsali: Walking in the Shadow of the Castle (Route M1)

A route that combines architectural beauty with panoramic views of the sea. The hike starts from the capital Chora, passes under the imposing walls of the Venetian Castle and descends towards the twin bay at Kapsali. The path follows old cobblestone streets, offering breathtaking views of the rocky islet of Chitra. It is an excellent choice for late afternoon, so you can enjoy the colors of the sunset, while the route can be extended to the picturesque chapel of Agios Ioannis “en Krimno”, which is literally wedged into the rock above Kapsali.

Useful Route Information:

  • Starting Point: The central square of Chora.
  • Duration & Distance: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, with a length of 3.5 kilometers.
