Il suo ambiente naturale ricorda fortemente le Cicladi, cos\u00ec come la sua architettura, che ha influenze egee. come un tempo ma ancora oggi \u00e8 un borgo di pescatori, con le barche dei pescatori che completano una cornice pittoresca unica. Nel settembre 1802, la nave Mentor, con la quale Lord Elgin stava trasportando i marmi del Partenone, naufrag\u00f2 appena fuori dal mare di Avlemonas. Cos\u00ec per un po&#8217; i marmi rimasero sul fondo del mare di Citera finch\u00e9 non furono tirati su da sommozzatori di Malta.
