We say “I’m going to spend the day”. Because our island, Tsirigo, is not a simple tourist destination. It is a refuge. If you are expecting to see the Greece of the window, you have probably come to the wrong place. Here, you will see Greece that insists on remaining real, a little abrupt, but full of smells and flavors that will haunt you.

Our daily life: The wind and the silence

When we wake up in the morning and see the “Punente” making waves in Kapsali, we know that the day belongs to the mainland. This is the first advice we give to our friends: Listen to the island. Don’t fight the weather. If it’s windy, retreat to our villages.
Walk to Mitata when the dew falls. It’s not just a village with a view of the gorge; it’s the place where you feel the breath of the earth. There you will understand what “calm” means to us. It is not the absence of noise, it is the sound of running water and the rustling of leaves that welcome you.

The taste of Tsirigos: What we put on our table

For us, food is not a “meal”, it is our way of showing you who we are. Besides, it is no coincidence that some of the local products of Kythira have gained a worldwide reputation for their wonderful taste and quality.
Our Rusk: When you open a bag of Tsirigos olive rusks, the whole place smells of olive oil. Made with our own olive oil, they are the base for our own dakos. Don’t eat them dry; moisten them lightly with seawater (if you know where they are clean) or simply with a little grated tomato.
The Gold of Kythera: Our thyme honey is not like the others. It is thick, dark and traps all the summer sun. A spoonful on fresh anthotyro is our ritual.
The Fatourada: Our welcome. A liqueur made from tsipouro, cinnamon and cloves. We treat you to it to “open” your heart. Be careful though, it is easy to drink but “bites” if you haven’t eaten anything before!
In our taverns: Don’t look for gourmet experimentation. Ask for stuffed zucchini flowers, sour cheese (trachana with milk) and fresh fish from our boats in Avlemonas or Platia Ammos. If you find Tsirigos sausage with wine and fennel, try it without a second thought.

Our hidden corner: Paleochora

If you want to understand the soul of the island, go to Paleochora. It is not just the ruins of a castle town. It is our “Mystras”. When you stand on top of the cliff of Kakos Lagadios, you feel the awe that our ancestors felt when they saw Barbarossa’s ships approaching. There, history is not in books, it is in the air that takes your voice.

Where Faith Becomes a Celebration: Our Festivals

If you want to see the true face of Tsirigos, you have to be here at one of our great festivals. For us, the festival is not a “tourist event”, it is our need to meet, sing and keep our roots alive.
The Lady of the Island: Panagia Myrtidiotissa. On September 24, the island stops breathing for anything else. Panagia Myrtidiotissa is our protector, the “mother” of all Tsirigots, wherever they are in the world.
The experience: The procession of the icon through the wild, rocky landscape of Myrtidi is an experience that causes shivers, even if you are not religious. The devotion is pervasive, but once the religious part is over, joy takes over.

Summer Gatherings

If you come in August, get ready to dance until the morning.
The Panagia Festival (August 15) in Potamos: It is the largest on the island. In the historic village square, among the old mansions, tables are set up for thousands of people. There you will hear the “Kythiraikos” dance—a circular, proud dance that will captivate you, even if you don’t know the steps.
The Wine Festival in Mitata: Usually the first weekend of August. The wine flows freely (and sometimes for free), the smell of local meat being grilled fills the village and the fun is so authentic that you will forget all your worries.

A Tip from a Local

At our festivals, don’t just stand there as spectators. Don’t be afraid to grab the hand of the person next to you in the circle. Ask a local to explain the lyrics to our songs—many of them speak of being abroad, as we Kytherians have a piece of our hearts in Australia and America.
When you see our grandparents get up to dance, you willget what “Tsirigos leventis” means. It is this power that has kept us standing on this rock, between three seas, for centuries.

A promise before you leave

We Tsirigos are proud and a little “closed” at first, like our landscape. But if you respect the place, if you don’t rush to see everything in two days, we will open our home to you.
Kythera is not for “taking photos”. It is for you to experience, to get your shoes dirty on the paths, to get salted on the rocks and to leave with a promise: That you will return. Because you never really say goodbye to Tsirigos.

Welcome to Tsirigo: An initiation into our place, beyond postcards The Proposal of the Month: Our own perspective on our home.
