The Mystra of Kythira
The castle town of Paleochora is located in the north west of the island. Built in the 12th century by Monemvasians and was the capital of the island called Agios Dimitrios. The location is surrounded by deep and precipitous ravine making it a natural fort. In 1537 it was destroyed by bloodthirsty admiral of the Turkish fleet Barbarossa, who massacred many inhabitants and destroyed the city, which was not rebuilt since then.
