Collection of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Art of Kythira
The Byzantine Museum of Kythira images located in Lower Meadow, The Collection is housed in the Byzantine church of Livadiou Ascension, a single-room temple vaulted without mural decoration, granted by the Holy Metropolis of Kythira. Includes samples of the artistic production of the island from early to late post-Byzantine period, including wall paintings coming from churches of Kythira, fragments of early Christian mosaics, Byzantine icons and silverware objects, metalwork and ceramics.
Some of the most important exhibits of the Museum Collection are:
Horseback hunter. Detail of a mosaic floor from the church of Saint George Mountain (early 7th century).
Saints Kirikos, George and notary and Ascension representation section. Frescoes from the church of St. John River (13th century).
St. John the Baptist. Portable icon (early 17th century).
Virgin Glikofilousa. Portable icon (early 17th century).
Two silver-plated candlesticks. From the temple of Metamorphosis Keramoto (18th century).
